A true Interior Designer
Let’s clear something up.
If you think an interior designer just fluffs cushions and picks a pretty colour for the feature wall , you’re not alone but you are also missing the real story
Interior design is not decorating. It’s not styling. And it’s definitely not walking into a shop, pointing at a $12,000 couch, and saying “that one.” And it’s definitely not what you see on reality TV.
Real interior design is strategic, human-centred problem-solving. It’s technical documentation, space planning, compliance, lighting layouts, joinery specs, and yes , sometimes selecting cushions. But only once the hard work is done.
Because if the layout’s wrong, no amount of styling will save it.
So what does an interior designer do?
They take the needs of individuals, families or companies and blend aesthetics with function within the constraints of the space and budget. Interior design is the glue between architecture and how people live. We’re translators, turning lived experience into layouts, plans, and places that just work.
Interior Designers ensure form and function meet, let’s be honest what attracts you to a book in the first place is it’s cover, and this is the same as the space you live in or work in. If you feel good in a space you will use it or luxuriate in it.
Qualified interior designers wear a lot of hats – and “homewares stylist” isnt one of them. We dont just make things look good, we actually make them work.
A qualified interior designer does all of this:
- Rethinks spatial flow and floor plans so your home feels like it all hangs together
- Pulls together lighting layouts, joinery design, and a finishes schedule that works for you
- Handles the red tape – that’s paperwork like DA documentation & coordinating with certifiers, planners and builders
- Solves all sorts of tricky problems – storage issues, compliance worries, how to keep it quiet and comfortable & designing spaces that are easy on the body
- Creates spaces that feel straightforward and effortles, because weve put a lot of thought into every detail
- Helps to make life easier by walking you through the whole process & cutting through all the decisions you’re not sure about
We’re not here to just help you pick between two tiles, we’re here to get to the root of the decision and ask all the questions that come before that choice. Questions that will really save you time, money and the regrets that come later on
An interior designer is a person with a multi-faceted set of skills who improve the interior of buildings, the living and working spaces of people and ultimately their comfort and/or productivity.
Oh yes and they do toss a few cushions around.

What You Should Be Asking
When hiring a designer, forget the fluff. Ask the good questions:
❌ “Do they have good taste?”
✅ “Can they uncover space I didn’t know I had?”
❌ “Do they do full service?”
✅ “Will they reduce stress and guide the process professionally?”
❌ “Can they style a room?”
✅ “Can they design a space that functions for my real life?”
Great design isn’t just about how it looks. It’s about how it performs.
So… Do We Toss Cushions?
Yes , at the very end. Once the plans are drawn, the lighting is designed, the documents are approved, and the space flows like it was always meant to.
At Inspired Spaces, we create homes and workplaces that feel seamless , because every choice is intentional. Every plan is strategic. And every detail is grounded in over 20 years of accredited, award-winning expertise.
